All of this information is shared with the appropriate authorities. Los Angeles Unified’s school-based vaccination program uses Daily Pass to register and schedule appointments, track vaccines in stock, perform check-in and data capture at time of appointment, sort high-risk individuals, offer waitlists to low-risk individuals and dashboards to view data, among other features. Upon the individual’s arrival to a campus, their QR code is scanned by a Los Angeles Unified school site leader who takes the individual’s temperature. The Daily Pass generates a unique QR code for each student and staff member that authorizes entry to a specific Los Angeles Unified location for that day only, as long as the individual receives a negative test result for COVID, shows no symptoms and has a temperature under 100 degrees. Even if a natural calamity forces one facility to close down, the other eight can take over. In home security terms, that’s called “monitoring redundancy.” It ensures that the monitoring service is available no matter what. It has nine monitoring facilities scattered throughout the country. Once again, it looks like ADT and Brinks are on par with each other here, but ADT has a hidden trick up its sleeve that gives it a clear advantage. These cellular security systems are more reliable than landline-only or internet-only systems. If that happens Brinks and ADT will use a different means of communication as backup: cellular signals. That’s reliable most of the time, but we all know that the internet sometimes goes out. Normally, their security systems send alerts to their respective monitoring centers over Wi-Fi. Brinks and ADT also monitor for home hazards such as fire and gas leaks, as well as medical emergencies.Ĭellular backup is another similar offering from Brinks and ADT. In case of a security breach, the monitoring center will trigger an alarm response and call for help on your behalf. That means your security system will be linked to a monitoring center. In addition to professional installation, ADT and Brinks require professional monitoring. That’s also one of the main reasons ADT is the best professionally installed security system. If problems arise within the first six months due to system malfunction or faulty installation, ADT will refund your payments for monitoring and installation (terms and conditions apply). We’re calling ADT the winner in this category because it offers a six-month installation guarantee, also known as a money-back guarantee. That resulted in slightly higher equipment costs, but at least we didn’t have to worry about paying the technician afterward. With Brinks, we didn’t pay a cent since the equipment cost covered the installation. We paid ADT a $99 installation fee, which is the standard fee for its installation service. ![]() After they finished, they gave us a tour of the system.Īnother distinction between Brinks and ADT is the installation cost. They did a walkthrough of the house, and then recommended the best areas to place each sensor. The technicians came the same day we signed up. With ADT, it was more professional and efficient. It felt like having a friend over to help us with the installation. ![]() The technician patiently explained how the system works and even gave us a number to call in case we encountered problems. We had a more personable experience with Brinks. Both companies provided us with a great installation experience, but the vibe was a little different for each. An expert technician will personally deliver your system, set it up, and walk you through its features. There’s also the fact that ADT works with Google Nest cameras, so clearly, ADT is the winner in terms of equipment.īrinks and ADT both offer professional installation. The equipment from ADT feels more modern and streamlined. You can see how the device works in our Brinks home security review. The Brinks system offered the same feature, but we had to use a separate device (the Cellular Communicator) to activate it. When we tested ADT, the ADT Control tablet had a built-in backup cellular chip, which allowed it to send alerts even when our Wi-Fi was down. facial recognition), so ADT offers more and better security camera options than Brinks.Įven though you get the same equipment options from either company, there’s a slight difference in quality. ![]() Google Nest cameras are arguably some of the smartest cameras around with person detection and Familiar Face Alerts (a.k.a. Brinks and ADT offer the same types of equipment, so there’s not much to discuss here. You can add a host of security sensors, hazard sensors, and cameras to your system. They are different devices, but they serve the same purpose. ADT calls its device ADT Control, while Brinks calls its the Home Hub. Both offer a touch-screen control panel that hosts intuitive controls and management options. ![]() A prime example of this is ‘KonoSuba’ which features four main characters and could be almost considered Seinfeld in Anime form. This was considered one of the weaker parts to the storyline of SAO, in so much that it simply stepped over one of the problems the characters were genuinely facing in order to avoid a premature end to the story.Ī large number of Isekai Anime are humorous in nature with the focus on the characters’ failings to comprehend the world, its rules and laws, and their inability to make sense of what is happening, similar to the western ‘Fish out of water’ style of comedy. This is where the line between Isekai and Sci-Fi is most visible, and SAO explains that most of the players still in the game have been moved to hospitals. In SAO another deviation takes place in so far that the characters are still physically in their own world, and therefore require external sustenance to survive. In traditional Isekai, the characters are aware they are in a fantasy world, but they don’t have to rely on anything from the previous to exist in the new one. Another caveat is that if they suffer enough damage and die, their real-world bodies will also expire, while removing the VR headset will also kill the players. He tells them that they must clear all 100 levels of Aincrad and beat the game in order to be able to log out. However once the game has officially begun, the creator addresses the populace and tells them that the ‘Log Out’ option has been disabled, meaning they cannot leave the game world and go back to their real lives. The game is set over 100 levels, with each one having two areas – a safe zone and a labyrinth in which the monsters and final boss of the level reside. The game is called Aincrad and is modelled on a medieval style French city. ![]() (Really funny when you consider that the titular "Bunny Girl" is in the show for like 2 minutes in the first ep and the rest of the time she's just dressed normally.and yet that's the title of the whole anime).SAO very carefully threads the needle between Isekai and Sci-Fi, by having the characters interact with technology known as the ‘Nerve Gear’ which has been designed to allow uses access to ‘Full-Dive Virtual Reality.’ Simply put, the characters can join a video game that reroutes all of their conscious neuroactivity to a video game, thus enabling them to experience it as if it were the REAL world. A U-Haul was spotted by an on-duty officer at a residence that has been under surveillance on Jenkins Road in Clearwater. Clearwater RCMP called in support from the Southeast District Emergency Response Team (ERT) late Monday night at approximately midnight on April 8. It strikes me that abandoning JSON and switching to a one-frame-per-line format would enable streaming to begin instantly. There were some obvious improvements that I could have made to the codec, had I not given up once I had proved to myself that, yes, I could watch The Godfather in the terminal, if I really wanted to.Įxperimenting with a 500MiB JSON file (converted from a 20-minute TV show), I was faced with a lead time of around one minute while the data was loaded into memory. I processed my test video again but the result was disappointing-the animation was mostly recognisable, but the resolution was simply too low to make the extra 'colours' worth it.Īfter much tinkering, a selection of ten characters seemed to yield the best results. After some googling I managed to find a list of around 70 characters that covered a wide range of screen real estate. The result wasn't terrible, but the image also wasn't as clear as I had hoped. Three 'colours' worked, but not well enough. ![]() Displaying them would simply involve building up multiple strings (one per scanline), flushing them all to the terminal once per frame and then issuing sleep and clear commands. My theory was that you could get a fairly good image out of those three colours by taking the average of each pixel's RGB components, ((R+G+B)/3), and assigning the lower third to black, the middle third to grey and the upper third to white.Ĭharacters that covered an appropriate amount of space on-screen could be used to represent those colours (I chose a space, a slash and a capital W, respectively). If the only change in a frame was that a character blinked, then only data for the pixels around their eyes would need to be stored.Īs mentioned previously, I opted for black, white and grey as the three colours of the palette. The JSON for such a key frame would look something like:Įnter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode Coding in Golang, a map of maps of integers (an associative multidimensional array, in other languages) seemed to fit the bill, where the map keys would represent x/ y pixel coordinates and the leaf values would be -1, 0 or 1 to denote the pixel's colour-I initially opted for a black / grey / white colour palette. To begin with, I knew that I needed to store an initial key frame containing the colour values of all of the first frame's pixels. I recently gained some experience working with images on the pixel level for another project, so my go-to approach was to read in an image (a GIF version of a movie seemed to make sense) and grab the RGB value of each pixel to save losslessly in some manner that could later be displayed in the terminal. ![]() The format certainly lent itself to storing necessary metadata such as the frame rate, which I planned to preserve from the input file and match on playback with dynamically calculated sleep commands. In the spirit of misusing technology, I decided that JSON would be the way to go. Having decided to write the most necessary codec I could think of, my first thought was how to store the data. But my brain couldn't let go of the challenge by the end of the meeting I had already mapped out the basic workings of the codec in my mind's IDE.įor those as lazy as me who just want to see the end result, this is what I managed to code in the space of about half an hour, using a GIF as input, JSON as the storage format and Golang as the programming language: We all joked about my absentmindedness and mused for a few minutes on the practicalities of playing back video as moving ASCII art, then continued with the retrospective. Such technology speaks for itself, surely? ![]() But all I heard was, 'You could play The Godfather in the terminal.' The reference was, of course, to asciinema, a tool for recording terminal sessions that was wholly-relevant to the retrospective. Sat in a weekly sprint meeting, my mind focused more on arranging my upcoming week of work than paying attention to the person offering a retrospective of their just-completed sprint, my ears perked up at the mention of what sounded like something magical. |
